In this second part of the movie “Smile,” there’s this guy Kyle who’s haunted by a seriously creepy spirit. This evil force makes people go through some pretty awful stuff, like witnessing murders or suicides, to spread itself around. Eventually, it gets to Skye Riley, who’s a big-time pop star. She sees her buddy Lewis do something shocking but doesn’t realize right away that she’s been caught in this eerie chain.
Skye starts having these intense and scary hallucinations, which she first thinks are just coming from her tough past and struggles with depression and addiction. The weird thing is they mess with her big time while she’s performing or doing public stuff. Then there’s Morris, an offbeat nurse who steps in to tell Skye what’s really going on and offers a way out.
Now think about being famous with all this craziness: fans who won’t leave you alone, everyone watching your every mistake, and those personal battles you fight that could turn into tomorrow’s headlines. The scary parts of the movie really tap into those fears that celebs might have.
The whole showbiz backdrop turns out perfect for this spooky story—where everything’s all smiles on the outside, even when things are a total mess inside. It’s kind of where you’d expect some smiley demon to feel right at home freaking out everybody!
So, here’s the deal: this movie’s pretty wild. Skye hooks up with this demon named “Smiley.” He’s a tricky character who messes with her, but somehow gives off these vibes like he’s exactly what she needs—like a friend who just won’t bail on her and always forgives her slip-ups. It’s kinda like Smiley is her secret getaway from the crazy world of showbiz while he’s actually the one controlling everything.
Now, Skye’s mom (played by Rosemarie DeWitt—you probably remember her from Rachel Getting Married) treats Skye more like an ATM than a daughter. She doesn’t really care about what Skye truly needs. Naomi Scott steps into Skye’s shoes, and you might’ve seen Naomi in Disney’s live-action Aladdin before. She’s used to being low-key backstage while big stars like Selena Gomez shine bright.
Naomi totally nails it as this famous-but-troubled pop star who’s adored by fans but just can’t chill or find any peace despite all her success. It’s got vibes similar to Britney Spears’ legendary meltdown era or something dark like that Brady Corbet flick Vox Lux. You know? Maybe Naomi throws in some bits of her own life drama into the mix! The story finishes with a twist that keeps you guessing, kinda like those classic M. Night Shyamalan endings we’re always scratching our heads over.
And oh yeah, Smile 2 isn’t as freaky as the original, but it ups the guts factor for sure and doesn’t hold back at all. It sort of feels like Scott’s big moment to shine again and might kick off more films in the series down the line!
